New Hilton Head Island High School
Project Summary
M. B. Kahn is replacing the Hilton Head Island community's high school campus, originally built in 1983. The project was delivered under a Construction Management at Risk contract and includes a completely new, modern academic campus constructed on an active, occupied school site. Maintaining safe, uninterrupted school operations has been a top priority, requiring close coordination by M. B. Kahn’s safety and field management teams.
To keep the campus fully operational and secure throughout construction, the project was divided into four phases with multiple active work zones separated by protective barriers. These barriers establish safe, predictable circulation for students and staff, while also clearly defining parking, bus, and delivery routes. Phase 1, consisting of a new, 3-story academic wing, was completed in summer 2026. All four phases of the project are scheduled for completion in 2029. The campus design, developed by Little Diversified Architecture and Consulting, also incorporates input from students to help shape collaborative and flexible learning environments.
The CM at Risk delivery method provided time for the Architect and M. B. Kahn contract team to work together early in the process with the School District as a coordinated team.
Features of the new campus include:
Integration of local culture and geography, including a custom floor mural highlighting the Lowcountry marsh
New Career Training Wing featuring collaboration with Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue to support first responder training and recruitment
Library and media center with extensive seating options
Open-concept learning environments
Variety of flexible and collaborative learning spaces
